Those values shape how we respond to need in the community and how we achieve our aims. Our values and shared Mission to continue the healing work of Jesus, come from Juan Ciudad, known as Saint John of God, who founded his first hospital in Granada, Spain in 1537. He responded to suffering with innovation and creativity, sheltering the destitute, the sick, and those living with mental illness. St John of God’s story and vision for supporting the most vulnerable in society continues to inspire our vision for inclusive, healthy and connected communities.

Our services in Canterbury and Wellington are connected to a wider movement across Australasia as part of the St John of God Health Care group. This organisation arose from the Sisters of St John of God, who first commenced work in Australia in 1895. Today St John of God Health Care operates hospitals and services across West Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and New Zealand. Our New Zealand services were brought into this group in 2008.

Our Catholic identity grounds our approach in an aspiration for human dignity, solidarity, and care for the most vulnerable. Catholic Social Teaching provides a framework through which we identify and respond to unmet need in the community, and the tools and resources that support us to coordinate and deliver our mahi.

St John of God Hauora Trust aspires to become a Tangata Tiriti organisation. This means honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi not as a policy obligation but as a living commitment, walking alongside Māori communities as partners, and ensuring our services reflect Te Ao Māori worldview, aspirations, and ways of being.

We are honoured to work in partnership with a Kaumātua who supports and guides our development in Te Ao Māori, and continuing to explore and honour the kawa and wero held in and represented by our services.

Alongside our bicultural commitments, St John of God Hauora Trust is privileged to work with people from a range of cultures, beliefs, abilities, genders, and sexual identities. The organisation is a member of Te Uru Tangata the Centre for Workplace Inclusion, and aims to continue our development against the Aotearoa Inclusivity Matrix.

St John of God Hauora Trust supports the Royal Commission into Abuse in Care and its significant recommendations that will shape how we care for those most vulnerable in society.
