Getting rangatahi on the road: licence support

For many rangatahi, a driver licence is the single biggest barrier between where they are and where they want to be. Without one, job opportunities narrow, independence is limited, and the gap between young people and the workforce widens.

Waipuna’s Driver Licence Support service exists to close that gap. Funded by the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), the programme is completely free for eligible young people, removing cost as a barrier to getting behind the wheel.

Partnering with Zebedee Driving School

We work alongside Zebedee Driving School, who bring specialist experience in supporting young people through the process of getting their licence. The team understands the specific challenges rangatahi face, from anxiety behind the wheel to limited prior experience, and delivers instruction in a way that builds confidence as well as capability.

Together, we walk alongside young people from their learner licence right through to their restricted, with practical driving lessons, support with the theory test, and help navigating the licensing process from start to finish.

Who is it for?

The programme is open to rangatahi aged 16 to 24 who are not currently in employment, education, or training, or who face barriers to employment. Eligibility is assessed through a short online form. Our team will follow up to confirm eligibility and get you started.

A driver licence changes more than your commute. For many of the young people we support, it represents a turning point: access to work, greater independence, and a real sense of forward momentum.
